The notion of acceptable political crime only became recognized in Europe once the bourgeoisie had successfully attacked previously established social structures. Nowadays there is a pretense of wishing to preserve a purely political crime, like some inexpensive luxury, a crime which doubtless no one will ever have the occasion to commit, since no one is interested in the subject any more; except for the professional politicians themselves, whose crimes are rarely pursued, nor for that matter no longer called political. All crimes and offenses are effectively social. Our era accumulates powers and imagines itself as rational. But no one recognizes these powers as their own. Nowhere is there any entry to adulthood. The only thing that happens is that this long restlessness sometimes eventually evolves into a routinized sleep. Because no one ceases to be kept under guardianship. The point is not to recognize that some people live more or less poorly than others, but that we all live in ways that are out of our control.

The extreme degradation of nourishment is a banality that, in the manner of other banalities, is generally tolerated with resignation: as a fatality, a ransom paid for progress that one knows can’t be stopped because one is overwhelmed by it everyday. Everyone keeps quiet about it. Some because they don’t want to speak of it, others because they can’t. The immense majority of the population that tolerates this degradation, as well as their strong suspicions about it, simply can’t face such an unpleasant reality. It is never agreeable to admit that one has been played for a fool, and those who have created “beefsteak” — and its claims — in the form of a “reconstituted” shadow of itself are also little disposed to admit what they have lost by allowing convenient ersatz semblances into their habitats. Those who can refuse nothing for fear of going back upon all that they have let happen in their lives are habitually the same.
